A village doctor named Idris Ali (50) has been trampled to death by a wild elephant in Haluaghat, Mymensingh. The incident happened at around 9:45pm on Tuesday (2 May) at Kandapara, near the Gabrakhali border area of the upazila.

Idris Ali was the son of Taimur Rahman of the village. Md Shahinuzzaman Khan, officer in charge (OC) of Haluaghat police station, confirmed the death to Jago News.

According to police and local sources, a herd of 30 to 35 elephants came down into the paddy fields in the Gabrakhali border area at night. Local farmers noticed and chased the elephants with sticks and fire to protect their crops. At one point, village doctor Idris Ali got very close to the elephants. An elephant then turned and chased him, and he could not get away. He was trampled to death on the spot.

OC Md Shahinuzzaman Khan said police had been sent to the scene after news of the death, and further details would be given later.
