A young man named Kamrul Hossain (37) has been trampled to death by an elephant in Haluaghat, Mymensingh.

The incident happened at about 11pm on 5 January in East Gobrakura village of Haluaghat Sadar union in the upazila. Kamrul, son of Ali Akbar of the village, was a farmer by profession. Haluaghat police station sub-inspector (SI) Zahidul Islam confirmed the death to Jagonews.

According to police and local sources, a herd of Indian elephants entered Bangladesh at about 10pm and was destroying a farmer's potato field. Some local people went to drive them away, but the elephants turned and chased them. The others got back safely, but Kamrul fell and was badly injured under the elephant's feet.

After the elephants left, local people took Kamrul to the Haluaghat Upazila Health Complex. The doctor referred him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment, but he died on the way.

SI Zahidul Islam said an unnatural death case has been filed at the police station over the incident.
