A farmer named Saiful Islam, 38, has been trampled to death by an elephant in Haluaghat, Mymensingh.

The incident happened around 11pm on 4 March in Mohishlati village of the upazila. Saiful Islam was the son of Abdul Halim of the same village.

Sub-inspector (SI) Aminul Islam of Haluaghat police station confirmed the matter to Jago News.

Police said Saiful Islam had gone to irrigate his onion field that night. A herd of Indian elephants crossed the border and began destroying vegetable fields. Villagers gathered to drive the elephants away, but the elephants chased them instead. Everyone else escaped, but Saiful Islam could not, and he was trampled by an elephant and died on the spot. Local people recovered his body after the elephants left.

SI Aminul Islam said the body had been handed over to the family without a post-mortem, and legal action over the incident is in process.
