How to Plant Grape Seedlings at Home

Grapes can be grown at home with the right position, soil and care; here is how to plant and look after grape seedlings.

Crops

You can grow grapes at home if you keep a few important points in mind. The grape is a vine crop that is easy to plant at home, and proper care and methods will give a good harvest. Here is how to plant grape seedlings at home.

Climate and position

Choose the right climate and position before planting. A warm, dry climate suits grapes. Pick a spot with enough sunlight: the vine needs at least six to eight hours of sun a day.

Preparing the soil

Grapes need fertile, well-drained soil. If the soil is heavy or waterlogged, mix in sand or coco peat. A soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is considered suitable for grape plants.

Choosing plants

Grape seedlings can be raised in two ways: from cuttings or from seed. You can buy seed from a local nursery. When buying a grape plant, check that it is healthy and free of pests.

Pot or pit

You can plant grapes in a pot, or in a pit two to three feet deep and wide. Choose a large pot so the vine can be held properly. Then add organic fertiliser to the pot and mix it well into the soil.

Enough water

Grapes need regular watering, but not too much, as waterlogging harms the vine. In summer, water the plant two to three times a week.

Applying fertiliser

The vine needs regular nutrition to grow well, so apply organic fertiliser every three to four months. Increase the amount of potassium as the vine grows, which improves the size and taste of the fruit.

Tie it up

Tie the vine to a bamboo pole or other support so it does not spread across the ground and can climb upwards. This keeps the fruit healthy and clean.

Care and pruning

Prune the vine for good fruit. Pruning controls the vine's growth and improves fruit quality. It should be done in winter. Remove old and dry branches from the vine so new ones have room to grow.

Maintenance

The vine needs regular care to grow well. Dig the soil around it from time to time, remove weeds, and give water and fertiliser as needed. Give the vine open space to grow and check it regularly to make sure it is growing in the right direction.

Harvesting grapes

Pick grapes only when fully ripe, once the fruit changes colour and softens. Pick the fruit from the vine in the morning.
