The government has decided to buy 365,000 tonnes of fertiliser from various countries and organisations at government level in the 2026-27 fiscal year, at a cost of Tk 2,695 crore. The purchase comprises 70,000 tonnes of urea, 115,000 tonnes of muriate of potash (MOP), 120,000 tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and 60,000 tonnes of triple superphosphate (TSP).
The purchases were approved on Monday, 24 August, at a meeting of the cabinet committee on government purchase at the Secretariat, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
Urea and MOP
Under the meeting's decisions, 40,000 tonnes of bulk granular urea will be imported from SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company of Saudi Arabia at a cost of Tk 188,66,31,820, or USD 380.83 a tonne.
Under a contract signed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) with JSC Foreign Economic Corporation Prodintorg of Russia, 35,000 tonnes of MOP will be imported for Tk 166,43,48,700, at USD 383.80 a tonne.
Under a further BADC contract with the Canadian Commercial Corporation, a total of 80,000 tonnes of MOP will be imported in two lots of 40,000 tonnes. One lot will cost Tk 190,13,45,200 and the other Tk 189,82,74,800, both at USD 383.80 a tonne.
DAP and TSP
Under BADC's contract with OCP Nutricrops of Morocco, 80,000 tonnes of DAP will be imported in two lots of 40,000 tonnes each. One lot will cost Tk 443,06,64,000 and the other Tk 442,88,76,000.
Under a contract with the same company, a further 60,000 tonnes of TSP will be imported in two lots of 30,000 tonnes. One lot will cost Tk 252,01,26,000 at USD 678 a tonne, and the other Tk 248,19,54,000 at USD 668 a tonne.
The committee also approved a proposal to import 40,000 tonnes of DAP under a state-level contract between Ma'aden of Saudi Arabia and BADC, at a cost of Tk 440,33,22,000, or USD 891 a tonne.
Urea from KAFCO
The committee also approved buying a second lot of 30,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea from Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Limited (KAFCO) for the 2026-27 fiscal year, at a cost of Tk 133,57,22,250. The price is USD 359.50 a tonne, made up of an FOB price of USD 354.50 and a bagging charge of USD 5.
