The district fisheries department seized 150 kg of jatka, or juvenile hilsa, in a drive at Boro Bazar in Gopalganj. The seized fish were later distributed to local orphanages and madrasas.

District fisheries officer Bijon Kumar Nandi conducted the drive at the district's Boro Bazar on Tuesday night (28 January).

He said every hilsa under 25 centimetres or 6 inches is considered jatka, and keeping, selling or stockpiling jatka is a punishable offence. "We carried out drives at various wholesale warehouses in Gopalganj Boro Bazar and seized about 150 kg of jatka. The warehouses were fined," he said.

He added that the seized jatka was distributed to various orphanages and madrasas, including the local Court Mosque madrasa, and that such drives will continue.
