The activities of a drugging gang (ogyan party) in Gangni upazila of Meherpur show no sign of stopping. The gang has been active for some time around the Bamondi sacrificial animal market, and this time a cattle trader, Touhidul Islam, 45, lost Tk 6 lakh to them.

It happened around 11am on Monday, 26 June, as he was travelling from Mirpur in Kushtia to the Bamondi market. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition. He is the son of Saiful Biswas of the Mirpur bus stand area.

It was learnt that Touhidul set out from home for the Bamondi market to buy cattle, travelling on a local bus from the Mirpur bus stand along the Meherpur-Kushtia road. On the way, gang members drugged him, took the Tk 6 lakh from the bag at his waist and slipped away. The bus dropped him, unwell, at Terail Bazar and drove on.

Locals heard his account and arranged for him to be taken to hospital. His relatives at the Bamondi market then went to the spot and set off with him for the hospital in Mirpur, Kushtia. Two weeks earlier, gang members had drugged two traders in the same way and taken Tk 2.5 lakh.

Abdur Razzak, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gangni police station, told Jagonews the matter is being looked into and action is being taken.
