Fowl typhoid is a contagious bacterial disease of chickens. When birds are infected, farmers suffer serious losses and often spend a lot of money on treatment. Knowing the symptoms and treatment of the disease makes it much easier to protect chickens from it.

Death rates are high among chickens with fowl typhoid. If the disease spreads through eggs, dying chicks are found in the hatching trays. White droppings stick around the vent. Birds die suddenly. There is green or yellow, very foul-smelling diarrhoea, and the head and comb become pale and shrunken.

Farmers need to be vigilant to prevent and control fowl typhoid. Do not hatch eggs from infected birds. Clean the incubator and hatchery before hatching eggs. Keep housing and feed and water containers clean. Prompt treatment gives good results.

Medicines of the cotrimoxazole, chloramphenicol and penicillin groups are quite effective against the disease. Vitamins and minerals given as supportive treatment help birds recover faster.
