Foods That Reduce Mental Stress

Six foods, from eggs and sea fish to blueberries and chamomile tea, can help ease mental stress at home.

Many people suffer from mental stress for all sorts of reasons. If the problem becomes severe, the advice of a doctor or psychologist is essential. But the stress can be eased somewhat at home.

  • Eggs: they contain many kinds of nutrients, along with a substance called choline, which keeps the brain healthy and reduces mental stress.
  • Sea fish: salmon and similar sea fish contain plenty of omega-3 and vitamin D, both of which help reduce mental stress.
  • Garlic: many studies have shown that several of garlic's components keep the mind away from anxiety and depression.
  • Broccoli: it contains a substance called sulforaphane, which reduces depression and calms the mind.
  • Blueberries: these are now easily available in this country too. Just a few blueberries a day can lift the spirits, and their antioxidants called flavonoids improve mood in a short time.
  • Chamomile tea: several components of this tea help with sleep. Drinking it at night brings better sleep, and so a better mood.
