Don't Waste Food

The writer urges readers not to waste food but to give what they cannot eat to the hungry, remembering neighbours and the homeless.

Humans are social beings, so we have to depend on one another. Today, perhaps, the well-off in society waste food with or without reason. Food is wasted at weddings and other events, yet the poor and helpless there cannot get food even when they ask for it.

Even now, how many people around us go without food, and who keeps track of them? Close your eyes and think for a moment how much at peace you are, compared with those who have no home, who live on the pavement, who struggle day and night for two handfuls of rice for one meal. And how many days have you asked after the people next door?

In truth, when people rise in life they forget the poor. Perhaps you too were once helpless, and your parents raised you with great hardship to make you well-off. If they want to, people can stand beside the neglected, humiliated, poor and suffering in society.

So do not waste food. If you cannot eat it, you should give it to the hungry. Let us be humane.
