A mobile court of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) fined two bakeries in Savar, Dhaka, a total of Tk 300,000 on Tuesday, 29 September, for breaching the Food Safety Act, 2013, BSS reports. The fines were collected on the spot during separate drives led by Executive Magistrate Anupam Das Anup.
At Bhorosa Bakers in the Ulail-Genda area, inspectors found misleading information on food labels, including no mention of the ammonia used to make biscuits. The factory was extremely dirty and unhygienic, and workers wore no gloves, masks or caps. It was fined Tk 200,000.
At Beko Live Bakery in Karnapara, raw and cooked food were kept together in the same refrigerator in unhygienic surroundings, and several food products and ingredients had no labels.
The bakery could not produce required documents, including trade and fire licences, a premises licence, workers' health certificates, pest-control records and an up-to-date water-testing certificate. It was fined Tk 100,000.
BFSA officials said such inspections and mobile court operations will continue in the public interest to keep food safe.
