Fifty venomous monocled cobras have hatched in Boalkhali, Chattogram, from eggs rescued from homes, a school and other places. The eggs were kept on sand in jars and watched closely, and the young snakes are now being prepared for release into a natural habitat.
Amir Hossain Shawon, a member of the Wild Life and Snake Rescue Team, collected the eggs from around the upazila over the past two months and set them on sand in jars so they could hatch naturally. Every egg hatched, he said.
"Monocled cobra eggs usually take 50 to 70 days to hatch. These were with me for about 40 days, and in that time every one of them hatched. The young are healthy," Shawon said.
He said he had to take particular care to keep fungal infection off the eggs and checked their condition regularly.
The decision to release the hatchlings was taken after talks with officials of the wildlife conservation department, and they may be set free in suitable habitat within a day or two.
Snakes play an important part in wildlife conservation and in keeping ecosystems in balance. Rescuers advise anyone who finds snake eggs or young near homes not to handle them, and to call trained rescuers instead.
