Hilsa prices are sky-high even in the peak season, and syndicates are mainly why hilsa is beyond the reach of ordinary people. The situation is the same in Faridpur. Acting on information, the district office of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection carried out a drive, during which hilsa prices fell by Tk 200 to Tk 300 a kg.

The directorate conducted the drive at around 12 noon on Thursday (5 September) at the Haji Shariatullah hilsa market in the town.

Daud Hossain, who had come to buy fish after the drive, told Jago News: "Hilsa that cost Tk 1,800 to Tk 1,900 before the drive has now come down to Tk 1,500 to Tk 1,600. Monitoring like this should happen from time to time. Only then will consumers be spared from dishonest traders."

Sohel Sheikh, assistant director of the Faridpur office of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, told Jago News that two wholesale traders had been fined Tk 40,000 each, a total of Tk 80,000. The other traders were given an initial warning.

Members of the Ansar battalion and students helped the directorate with the drive.
