Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud has told deputy commissioners (DCs) to find out whether LPG is being sold at inflated prices anywhere in the country through an artificial shortage. He gave the instruction at an online meeting with the DCs from the Secretariat on Wednesday, 30 September.
The minister said there is no shortfall in LPG supply, but that an artificial shortage may be created in some areas to sell gas at higher prices. The DCs have been asked to find out why shortages are being reported and higher prices charged where supply is normal, and to send reports with evidence.
Once the DCs report, meetings will be held with importers and other stakeholders and the necessary action taken, he said. Supply will be increased in areas where it is found to be short.
He warned that action will be taken against those responsible if an artificial crisis is created or LPG is sold above the price set by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
He also told the deputy commissioners to stay alert to keep supply normal. The BERC price is the benchmark for the market, and checking it on the ground now falls to the district administrations.
