Mustard plants more than eight feet tall are drawing farmers and onlookers to Md. Swapan's field in Sawratoli village, Sadar Dakshin upazila, Cumilla. Ordinary mustard in the area stands far shorter.
Swapan said he found the seed online and sowed the hybrid 7712 variety on 61 decimals of land, spending about Tk 15,000. With the crop in good condition he hopes to sell around Tk 1 lakh worth, and he plans to keep seed from his own field for next season.
Neighbouring farmers Anu Mia and Nurul Islam said they had grown mustard for years and never seen plants this tall. Seeing the number of pods, both want to try the variety next season.
Sub-assistant agriculture officer Sahida Khatun said about 20 hectares of the block are under mustard this year. The height of Swapan's plants and their pod count caught her attention, and she expects a good yield and more oil from the variety.
Upazila agriculture officer Jonayed Kabir Khan said Swapan is growing a foreign hybrid that has never before been grown in the area, and the agriculture office is keeping in touch with him and advising him.
How much the field actually yields will only be known at harvest, and the neighbours say they will decide on the variety from those figures. Agricare24 carried the report from The Daily Dhaka.
