Chattogram social and voluntary organisation Durbar Tarunya has completed its tree-planting programme 'Amra Mali' (We Are Gardeners) under the slogan 'My care, my tree'.

The current phase ended with the planting of more than 100 trees in the city's CRB area on the afternoon of Tuesday, 27 September. The event was chaired by the organisation's founder, Muhammad Abu Abid, and the chief guest was Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babor, inventor of a coronavirus protection booth.

Speaking as chief guest, he said trees are called oxygen factories. People, trees and animals share a relationship through the air, each serving the others, so there is no alternative to planting trees to protect the environment, and everyone should take part in planned tree planting.

He said planting trees and caring for them properly would not only help maintain environmental balance and make the country self-sufficient in fruit and forest products, but would also improve families' finances and contribute to the country's overall development. Each of us should plant and properly look after at least two trees every year, he said.

Founder Muhammad Abu Abid said trees are our best friends. They do not only add natural beauty; they prevent soil erosion, hold back floods and protect life and property from storms. Their role in regulating the weather is immense.

Without trees the earth would become a desert, he said. Trees keep us alive by supplying oxygen. Tree planting has increased in Bangladesh, but there is hardly any attention to caring for the trees. Through 'Amra Mali' the organisation wants to raise awareness, because everyone more or less knows trees are needed, but they must be looked after to grow properly.

Also present were Rabiul Hasan, Hridoy Hossain Mollick, Md Kamrul Islam, HM Alauddin, Md Emdadul Haque Maruf, HA Mobarak, Hakimul Islam Sakib, Safayet Morshed, Mobarak Ullah and other central and district leaders.
