More than 25 per cent tree cover will be created in the area under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), DSCC mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has said.
He said this on Thursday (23 May) at Nagar Bhaban while opening a "tree plantation programme and sapling distribution" organised by Dhaka Metropolitan South Chhatra League.
From under 10 to 17 per cent
Mayor Sheikh Taposh said: "Our tree cover was below 10 per cent. Through implementing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's announcement it has now risen to 17 per cent. But to tackle the impact of global climate change, we have a target of raising tree cover to 25 per cent."
Expressing optimism, he said: "I firmly hope that through our ongoing projects and the activities we have taken up, and with the united efforts of everyone including Dhaka Metropolitan South Chhatra League, the South City will be the first to reach this target. We will be able to create more than 25 per cent tree cover in the South City area."
The mayor called on the Metropolitan South Chhatra League leaders to plant trees in Osmani Udyan and Panthakunja park, and along both sides of the Adi Buriganga channel and the Shyampur, Jirani, Manda and Khalunagar canals.
He said: "You will plant trees there. We will cover Dhaka city in green and turn this city into a beautiful, green and verdant metropolis."
Saplings handed out
Thanking South Chhatra League for taking up the tree plantation programme, the mayor said: "The autocrat and killer Ziaur Rahman put weapons in the hands of students. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has put pens and notebooks in the hands of those students."
The mayor distributed saplings to the Metropolitan South Chhatra League's secretary for female students' affairs and the Khilgaon Model College Chhatra League unit. He then planted a krishnachura sapling on the Nagar Bhaban premises.
The event, moderated by Dhaka Metropolitan South Chhatra League general secretary Sajal Kundu, was presided over by its president Rajibul Islam Bappy. Other leaders and activists were also present.
