Mohammad Ejaz, administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), has said citizens' active participation is essential to building a fair and liveable city. If everyone works together regardless of party or opinion, Dhaka can be turned into a just, inclusive and liveable city, he said.

He was speaking on Friday 8 August at the prize-giving ceremony of the "Run for Fair City" marathon held at Agargaon in the capital.

More than 500 young people took part in the marathon, organised jointly by the non-government organisation Brighters and the DNCC. The event was used to spread the message of a just, humane and environment-friendly city among young people.

Speaking as chief guest, the DNCC administrator said effective participation of young people is extremely important in building a fair city, and their active involvement will play an important part in creating a liveable, environment-friendly and humane city.

He said the DNCC has already made various plans for environmental fairness, more public space and the expansion of green space.

The Run for Fair City had races in two categories, of 5 and 7.5 kilometres. A pledge was made to plant one tree for every registration, presented as a symbol of greening the city.

The organiser, Brighters, said the initiative would awaken a sense of civic responsibility, participation in urban planning and the idea of fairness among young people, adding that the young generation can build a Dhaka where dignity, justice and environmental equality are assured.
