Sacrificial animals were being sold under a metro rail station, outside the set boundary of the Diabari cattle market in the capital. On seeing this, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan took immediate action.
With the officials on duty, he had all animals removed from the road under the station and ordered the road opened to traffic.
Road diverted to tether animals
The DNCC administrator went with the officials concerned on 25 May to inspect the permanent and temporary cattle markets under the city corporation. It was found that the road under the Uttara Centre metro rail station had been diverted and animals tied up there. The administrator expressed anger and gave strict instructions that the market must not spread onto the road under any circumstances.
He immediately phoned the lessee of the market and asked him to come to the spot, then instructed him not to hold the market on the road. He also ordered that if the instruction was defied, fines should be imposed through a mobile court.
The lessee's side said that because of the morning rain some animal owners had kept their animals under the metro station for a short time. They said they were following DNCC's instructions and taking steps to ensure no animals were kept on the road.
Other markets inspected
Earlier in the morning the DNCC administrator inspected the Gabtoli cattle market, where he gave strict instructions that no money beyond the market fee should be collected. He also spoke with security personnel on duty about the market's security arrangements.
He later inspected the temporary cattle markets set up on vacant land at 300 Feet, Beraid and Swadesh Properties, and gave instructions to ensure no traffic congestion or hardship for people travelling home for Eid.
Accompanying him were DNCC chief executive officer Muhammad Asaduzzaman, chief waste management officer Commodore Mohammad Humayun Kabir, chief health officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury and chief engineer Brigadier General Syed Rakibul Hasan.
