A seven-year-old girl named Mahi has died of a snakebite while playing with classmates in a harvested paddy field in Nawabganj, Dinajpur.
The incident took place on the evening of Tuesday 28 November in Ishwarpur village of Mahmudpur union in Nawabganj upazila. Mahi was the daughter of Md Monirul Islam of the village.
Shamim Mia, member for Ward 5 of Mahmudpur union, confirmed the incident to Jago News.
Taken to a healer first
He said Mahi was playing with classmates in a harvested paddy field beside her home shortly before dusk on Tuesday when a venomous snake bit her. After she came home and told them, family members first took her to a local healer, Nikhil Chandra, for initial treatment, and then to the Nawabganj Upazila Health Complex. The doctor on duty referred her to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital for better treatment, and according to his account she died after being taken there.
Tawhidul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Nawabganj police station, told Jago News that the child died on the way to Dinajpur after the snakebite.
