Vegetable prices have risen by Tk 10 to 20 a kg in a week, and broiler chicken by Tk 10 a kg. Vegetable sellers say prices went up because sudden floodwater entered vegetable fields and damaged the crops, reducing supply. Chicken sellers say chicken prices are rising in step with the prices of other daily essentials. This was the picture on the morning of Friday, 22 October, at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, Town Hall and several other areas of the capital.

At the markets, tomatoes are selling at Tk 150 to 160 a kg, carrots at Tk 160, beans at Tk 120, green chillies at Tk 120, round aubergines at Tk 80, long aubergines at Tk 60, cauliflower at Tk 60 a piece, bitter gourd at Tk 60, yardlong beans at Tk 80, ash gourd at Tk 40 a piece, bottle gourd at Tk 50-60 a piece depending on size, pumpkin at Tk 40, snake gourd at Tk 60, pointed gourd at Tk 40, okra at Tk 60, taro stolons at Tk 60, spiny gourd at Tk 60, radish at Tk 60, papaya at Tk 20 a kg, potatoes at Tk 18 to 20, local onions at Tk 70 and Indian onions at Tk 60 to 65.

Broiler chicken, which sold at Tk 180 a kg last week, is up Tk 10 at Tk 190. Sonali chicken is also up Tk 10, at Tk 330. Layer chicken is unchanged at Tk 230, and egg prices are also unchanged.
