A cattle trader has allegedly been beaten in the Shukrabad area next to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station in the capital for refusing to take his cattle to a sacrificial animal market. Police have detained five people, including a Jubo League leader, over the incident.

The incident took place in the Shukrabad Main Road area of the capital at around 3.15am on Tuesday, 20 June. Cattle trader Zulfikar filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station; the case number is 47.

The detained Jubo League leader is Maruful Islam Biplob, 50, reported to be the convener of the Mohammadpur police station unit of the Jubo League. The four others arrested are Dewan Arafat Partha, 27, Md Tanvir, 23, Zahirul Islam, 37, and Rafi, 26.

The case statement says that at around 3am on Tuesday, 20 June, several cattle traders set out from Mohadevpur in Naogaon with 18 cattle for Boalkhali market in Chattogram. When they reached Shukrabad Main Road in the capital, the Jubo League leader and several others stopped the cattle truck with sticks and beat the trader and the truck driver travelling with it. They also tried to snatch the cattle, and Tk 5,000 in cash was taken from the pocket of cattle trader Azad, who was on the truck.

Hearing the traders' cries, a patrol vehicle of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police went to the scene and detained several people there. Based on information from them, the Jubo League leader was then detained.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Utfal Barua told Jagonews24 that several people stopped a cattle truck in the Shukrabad Main Road area and told the cattle trader to take his cattle to the market they had leased. When he refused, a scuffle broke out and the trader was beaten. Police reached the scene and were able to detain five people there. After cattle trader Zulfikar filed a case, the five were shown as arrested and sent to court, he said.
