The 31st BCS Cadre Association held a tree-planting programme at Dhaka College in the capital. It was part of mass tree planting at educational institutions at all levels across the country to mark World Environment Day.

On the afternoon of 10 June, timber, fruit and medicinal trees were planted in front of the college's main administrative building, beside the playground and along the pond bank.

Mushfiqur Rahman, organising secretary of the association and assistant professor of political science at Dhaka College, said the programme is held every year to increase green cover across the country. Last year 3,100 trees were planted nationwide.

The association's general secretary, Mrittunjoy Dey Sajal, ADC of the Tejgaon zone of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said mass felling of trees across the country is threatening the environment and nature, and far fewer trees are being planted than are being cut. "Our initiative aims to prevent natural disasters and in the hope of a beautiful environment. We hope people across the country will be inspired by it and take care of trees."

The association plans to plant more than 5,000 trees this year, said its president, Abdul Hadi.

"Our work began in response to the Prime Minister's call to plant one fruit, one timber and one medicinal tree," he said. "The officers concerned will also keep regular watch over the trees after they are planted. It is not enough just to hold a tree-planting programme; the trees must be cared for too."

Officers from various cadres of the 31st BCS were present.
