Shafiqul Islam Milton, administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation, said no complaints of extortion had been received from cattle markets in the Dhaka North and South city corporation areas.

He said this in reply to a journalist's question while visiting the Gabtoli cattle market in the capital at midday on Tuesday (26 May).

Asked about an allegation that Tk 15,000 was being collected for each post used to tie cattle at the Gabtoli market, Milton said: "We investigated this matter and found no truth in it. No one is being charged more than the 5 per cent hasil."

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin said: "If there is any specific complaint of extortion, let us know and we will act immediately."

He added: "We are talking to people at all the markets under Dhaka North City Corporation, the temporary ones and the permanent Gabtoli market. No incident of extortion has come to our notice yet. If there is any specific complaint, law enforcement and other agencies are there and will take action."

Earlier, Shafiqul Islam Milton visited the Gabtoli market together with Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Local Government, and they spoke to cattle traders and buyers.
