Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of Muslims, is just a day away, and sacrifice is at its heart. Many people have already bought their animals, while others are waiting to buy at the last minute. As every year, temporary seasonal fodder markets have grown up around the cattle markets alongside the sacrificial animals.
These temporary stalls are not only around the markets but also on streets and lanes across the capital. Seasonal traders are selling straw, grass, bran and other fodder, laid out by the roadside or on vans, sitting or standing.
What fodder costs
The scene was the same on Tuesday (26 May) across Karwan Bazar, Jatrabari, Shanir Akhra and other neighbourhoods of the city. A bundle of fresh grass is selling for Tk 30 to Tk 40 and a bundle of straw for Tk 20 to Tk 25. Wheat bran costs Tk 50 to Tk 80 a kg depending on quality, gram bran Tk 100, khesari Tk 80 and kalai bran Tk 60 a kg.
Oil cake is selling for Tk 60 to Tk 70, rice bran (kura) for Tk 30 to Tk 40, and a bundle of jackfruit leaves for Tk 30 to Tk 35, with large bundles at Tk 80 to Tk 90. A sack full of jackfruit leaves sells for Tk 150 to Tk 200. Colourful garlands were seen selling for Tk 150 to Tk 250.
Traders from across the country
Sellers said they had been selling this fodder since Monday (25 May) morning. Traders have brought the goods by truck from different parts of the country.
Many small traders at Karwan Bazar have turned into seasonal fodder sellers for Eid-ul-Azha, enquiries found.
