A monkey of a rare species rescued from a village in Burichang, Cumilla, has been released into a forest.

Upazila forest officer A K M Lutfullah released the monkey into the Kalikrishnanagar forest in the upazila's Bakshimul union on Monday (30 January) afternoon.

Local people had seized the monkey from Kanthanagar village in the upazila's Pirjatrapur union at midday on Sunday (29 January).

Kabir Hossain of Kanthanagar village said a troop of monkeys had suddenly come from the Indian border to Kanthanagar and three or four other villages, entering people's homes in search of food and damaging fruit, flowers and crops in the fields. On Sunday afternoon a young man named Mehedi Hasan set a trap with bananas and other food on the roof of his house and caught one monkey. Villagers crowded in to catch a glimpse of it. On learning of it, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Sahida Akter directed the forest officer to rescue the monkey.

Forest officer A K M Lutfullah told Jago News that the monkey caught in Kanthanagar village is of a rare species. On being informed, he said, it was rescued and released into the forest land of the Kalikrishnanagar forest department in Bakshimul union.
