The advisory council has approved a proposal to declare locally produced cotton fibre an agricultural product, the Chief Adviser's press secretary Shafiqul Alam has said.

The approval was given on the morning of 6 May at a meeting of the advisory council chaired by Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government.

Citing the meeting, the press secretary told a briefing that afternoon at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the capital that farm loans would become easier to get for those who want to grow cotton.

He said the government wants to expand the garment industry, and being able to grow cotton locally on the country's own farmland would be an advantage.
