Today is Eid-ul-Azha, and animal sacrifice began after the Eid prayers. The biggest challenge of the sacrifice Eid is cleaning up blood and waste after slaughter, even though Dhaka's two city corporations make big plans for this work every year.
That does not mean people can neglect their own responsibility. Everyone should throw rubbish in the right place and keep the area around their home clean. Some people leave animal waste lying anywhere after the sacrifice, spreading bad smells and germs in the area.
Everyone should therefore take part in waste management together. Waste produced after the sacrifice should be cleaned up at once using bleaching powder and other cleaning products, and kept in a set place so that cleaners can remove it easily.
How to clean up after the sacrifice
- Those who sacrifice at home or on a lawn must clean up the waste themselves.
- Rather than sacrificing individually, the neighbourhood can use one designated spot, which also makes it easier to remove the waste together from one place.
- Several families in the same building can join together to manage the waste after the sacrifice. Waste is removed faster and the environment is less affected.
- Separate the dung and offal of the slaughtered animal and keep them in a tied polythene bag. Never leave them open, or germs will spread quickly.
- After the sacrifice, wash the blood from the slaughter spot with disinfectant water and sprinkle bleaching powder, so that there is no smell and mosquitoes cannot lay eggs in standing water.
- Sell or donate the hide as soon as possible after the sacrifice, or it will start to smell.
- Dig a pit in a nearby field or unused plot before the sacrifice. Dung, urine, blood and rubbish should be buried in the pit rather than thrown anywhere.
- Burn the mat on which the meat was kept after the sacrifice, or it may later breed mosquitoes.
- Keep the inside of the house clean as well as the surroundings. Many people use the dining room to cut and sort the meat once it is brought home.
Cleaning the meat-cutting area
Always spread polythene where the meat will be cut. When cutting and dividing is done, lift the sheet or mat and first wash the area with water. Then clean the floor with hot water mixed with detergent.
