The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) in Barrackpore and the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) at Maithon are looking for new ways to work together on reservoir fisheries, cage farming and the livelihoods of fisher communities, the institute says.

The two have a long history. They first worked together in 2007 under a fish stocking programme sponsored by the National Fisheries Development Board in the Maithon, Panchet, Tilaiya and Konar reservoirs, which ran until 2009. A cage hub was set up at Maithon Reservoir from 2010, and the partnership has been covered by three memoranda of understanding, signed in 2010, 2018 and 2024.

The areas now on the table include regular cage stocking and cage farming, enhancement of the reservoir fisheries, transfer of technology and joint work under DVC's corporate social responsibility programmes. Both sides also discussed making the aquatic resource facilities at Maithon more functional. CIFRI says such work could particularly benefit tribal fisher communities who depend on the reservoirs.

The talks were held between DVC Maithon's head of office Subir Saha and deputy general manager Sukhamoy Nayak and the CIFRI team from the Open Water Aquaculture and Production Management Division.

CIFRI director Dr Pradip Dey said that combining DVC's reservoirs and institutional support with the institute's science gives considerable scope to strengthen cage-based fisheries, reservoir enhancement and community fisheries programmes.

The institute expects the renewed dialogue to give a framework for taking its technologies into the field, particularly in cage farming and reservoir fisheries management, and to make sustainable use of DVC's water bodies.
