Hemanta, the late-autumn season, is still about 15 days away, but at the tail end of sharat the change of season is already showing. Across Sylhet, chhatim trees have begun to bloom, their branches filling with white flowers.
By day it is the flowers' looks that catch the eye; after dusk it is their sweet scent, which spreads through the city's lanes. Caught on the air by a passer-by, it is a sign that the new season is not far off.
Prothom Alo photographer Anis Mahmud took the pictures around Keane Bridge in Sylhet. In one, a man sits in the shade of a chhatim tree heavy with blossom; in another, flowers cover the branches entirely. The riverbank is thick with their fragrance.
The other pictures show a sparrow perched on a chhatim branch and bees drawn in by the scent. Fallen petals lie on the ground beneath the tree, and under the blue autumn sky the whole tree looks like a basket of flowers.
