Two people have been injured in a jackal attack in broad daylight in Chuadanga. The incident took place at midday on Thursday (21 September) in Kutubpur union of Chuadanga Sadar upazila.

Day labourer Jewel, 23, and farmer Akkas Ali, 69, bitten by the jackal, are being treated at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.

The attacks took place at around 3pm in the 9 Mile brickfield area of Kutubpur union and in the Kushogari field in the same area. Villagers are alarmed by the jackal bites in separate places at the same time.

According to villagers, at around 3pm a jackal suddenly attacked day labourer Jewel on the drying ground of 9 Mile Janata brickfield. Jewel tried to run away and struggled with the jackal for 3-4 minutes. He suffered bleeding wounds to his lips and jaw. Shortly afterwards another farmer, Akkas Ali, was bitten by a jackal in the Kushogari field in the same area.

Both were rescued and taken to the emergency department of Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, where the doctor on duty gave them first aid. Dr Afrina Islam said the two had been given first aid and were now under observation.

Md Bakhtiar Hamid Bipul, founding president of the environmental organisation Pankouri, said jackals do not normally attack people, as they are afraid of them. In particular circumstances the jackal may have done this out of fear, he said.

Hasanuzzaman Manik, chairman of Kutubpur union parishad in Chuadanga Sadar, said the incident was very surprising.
