China and Pakistan offer training and fellowships to Bangladeshi doctors, says health minister

Marking the upgrade of the National ENT Institute to 250 beds, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain also urged couples to be tested for thalassaemia before marriage.

China and Pakistan have opened the way for Bangladeshi doctors to receive training and fellowships, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain said on Wednesday, 30 September. He was speaking as chief guest at a discussion in Dhaka marking the upgrade of the National Institute of ENT from 135 to 250 beds.

China has said it will take Bangladeshi doctors on fellowships and give them access to its hospitals, the minister said. Chinese doctors and specialists will come to Bangladesh to give hands-on training, and Bangladeshi doctors will be taken to China for training where needed.

Pakistan has expressed interest in treating cancer patients from Bangladesh, and Pakistani doctors will also come to train doctors here, he said. In his view such cooperation will raise doctors' skills and widen access to specialised care.

Sakhawat Hossain urged doctors to do more to raise public awareness in preventing diseases including thalassaemia and HIV. Treating patients is not the end of the job, he said; doctors should go to rural areas in particular and tell people about the causes of disease, prevention and the tests they need.

He advised couples to be tested for thalassaemia before marriage: if both husband and wife are carriers, their child is at risk of the disease, so both should have a blood test before they marry.
