Chattogram City Corporation and Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) will work together to ensure animal welfare, Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said on Saturday, 3 October. Speaking as chief guest at a World Animal Welfare Day event at CVASU, he said the city corporation would fully support any initiative the university takes.
The mayor also asked for CVASU's help with the city's own animal-friendly measures. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Yousuf Elahi Chowdhury, the event's chief patron, said animal rights can be secured if the university, the city corporation and local government work together.
This year's theme was "See the World Through Their Eyes". The day was organised by the university's Department of Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology and began at 9.30am with a procession of teachers, officials, students and staff led by the vice-chancellor.
A poster gallery and a departmental documentary show followed. Professor Dr Mohammad Rashedul Alam, director of student welfare, presented the keynote paper, "Animal welfare: the Bangladesh context". The university launched an Animal Welfare Club and unveiled an animal welfare bulletin and a collection of MS thesis abstracts.
