Kansat mango market in Chapainawabganj normally winds down in September. This year it is still meeting and trading at the end of October, as growers' late-bearing varieties bring mangoes in batches, and growers think it is becoming a year-round market.
Abdul Karim of Bhabanipur village brought 10 crates, five maunds, of Ashwina mangoes. He asked Tk 10,500 a maund; the buyer offered Tk 9,000, and he says he will not sell below Tk 10,000. He has another 30 crates of Ashwina on the trees, enough for at least 15 days. His Ashwina trees bear three times a year, and he gets more for them now than in the main season.
Akbar Ali of Gomastapur brought seven crates of Himsagar and Kalyanbhog. He asked Tk 20,000 a maund; the buyer offered Tk 16,000, and he will not go below Tk 18,000. Various varieties in his 16-bigha orchard are bearing out of season, and he expects to keep selling for another month.
The market used to be silent at this time of year; now growers bring late mangoes in small lots and traders come to buy. Many growers in Chapainawabganj and Naogaon now grow year-round and other varieties to sell out of season, and some of the fruit is exported.
