Md Monir Hossain Gazi, an entrepreneur in Chandpur who returned from working abroad, is earning at least Tk 2 lakh a month selling grass, according to the report, whose headline puts his monthly income at Tk 3 lakh. Grass grows everywhere in the country, but this young man is producing lawn carpet grass commercially. People who enjoy gardening buy it to beautify their yards and other places.

Monir Hossain Gazi, son of Abu Taher of the Puran Bazar area of Chandpur town, went to Bahrain in 2013 and worked in gardens there for a long time. He returned home in 2019 and, using his gardening experience, began growing lawn carpet grass, which he sells at least three times a year. He started on fallow land, but now around 50 people work on several of his projects.

Workers on the project, Md Firoz, Rasu Mia, Rafiq Gain, Shah Alam and Moktar Hossain, said: "First, polythene is spread over ploughed land and soil mixed with organic fertiliser is laid on top. Then stored lawn grass seedlings are planted. With regular weeding and care, mature grass is ready in four months. Many of us support our families with this work. It is more comfortable than other work, and working on regular daily wages we are living well with our families."

Entrepreneur Monir Hossain Gazi said: "After coming back from abroad I was wondering what to do in the country. Then I used my experience of working in gardens. Growing lawn carpet is a profitable business. The grass is sent to different districts. I plan to grow it on more land in future. This project has given many people work. The labour is light and the money is good, so everyone wants to work here. I'm glad that many people are benefiting from working here."

Dr Safayet Ahmed Siddiqui, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chandpur, said: "Because production costs are low, growing this grass commercially is highly profitable. Grass is found in every corner of Bangladesh. Lawn carpet grass suffers no pest or disease attacks, so growing it commercially pays. The agriculture department will support such entrepreneurs, including with technical advice."
