A huge koi bhola fish was caught last Friday in the net of a poor fisherman. But after he brought it to market to sell, forest department staff took the fish away.
The incident took place at Canning in South 24 Parganas district of the Indian state of West Bengal.
Anandabazar Patrika reported that the 74kg koi bhola was caught in a fisherman's shrimp net in the Matla river at Canning.
Never this big before
The fish is often caught in the Matla river, but one this large had never been caught before.
Usually the fish caught weigh two to three kilograms and sell for Rs 200 to 250 a kg.
When the fish was brought to Canning fish market to be sold, the news spread at once. People came in crowds to see it, and there was a rush to take photographs.
However, the forest department said the fish could not be sold, and its staff seized it.
Forest department staff declined to comment on why the fish was seized.
