There is no justification for the price of broiler chicken to be above Tk 200, according to AHM Safiquzzaman, director general (DG) of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection.

"There is no justification for the consumer price of broiler chicken to be above Tk 200. We have held a meeting on this and submitted eight recommendations to the government. I hope those concerned will certainly try to bring the broiler market under control to ease consumers' hardship," he said.

The DG spoke to journalists at noon on Wednesday (22 March) after monitoring Banalata kitchen market at New Market in the capital.

He warned that action would be taken against the committee of any market in the country that becomes unstable.

The director general said there is no reason for consumers to worry at the moment, as there is no shortage of goods in the market ahead of the coming Ramadan.

Earlier, joint inspectors from three organisations visited the market and asked traders not to charge more than the set prices. The joint market monitoring was organised by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and Bangladesh Shop Owners' Association.

Present were Manjur Mohammad Shahriar, director (administration and finance) of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, Helal Uddin, president of Bangladesh Shop Owners' Association, and FBCCI leaders.

Director General Safiquzzaman said: "During the monitoring we exchanged views with traders under the slogan 'Buy goods when needed, keep prices under control'. Going round the market, we saw there is no shortage of any product. The prices of one or two items have actually fallen. Now there is instability only in the broiler chicken market."
