Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized about two and a half kilograms of snake venom being smuggled to India through the Birampur border in Dinajpur. Its estimated market value is Tk 16 crore 2 lakh.

BGB gave the information in a press release on the afternoon of Friday, 26 July. Earlier, around dawn, members of the Joypurhat 20 BGB Battalion recovered the venom from South Damodarpur, a border area of Birampur upazila.

Lt Col Nahid Newaz, commander of the Joypurhat-20 BGB Battalion, said smugglers were trying to take snake venom into India through the Damodarpur border area of Birampur. Learning of this, members of the battalion carried out a raid there. Sensing the BGB's presence, the smugglers dropped the venom and fled. BGB members then recovered 2 kg 466 g of snake venom.

He said the estimated market value of the recovered venom is Tk 16 crore 2 lakh.
