The fisheries department and the upazila administration in Bhola detained nine fishers for catching hilsa in the Tetulia river in defiance of the ban. Some 65 kg of hilsa and 10,000 metres of net were seized from them.

They were detained on the Tetulia river at Nazirpur in Badarpur union of Lalmohan upazila.

Bhola district fisheries officer Biswajit Kumar Deb said the nine fishers were caught with nets and hilsa while fishing on the Tetulia at Nazirpur on Monday night, in breach of the 22-day ban. Later that night a mobile court fined each of them Tk 5,000. The court was run by Lalmohan upazila nirbahi officer and mobile court magistrate Md Tauhidul Islam.

He added that the seized nets were destroyed by burning, and the seized hilsa were distributed to a local orphanage and to people in need.
