The upazila administration, the fisheries department and the Coast Guard have detained 10 fishermen for catching hilsa in the Meghna and Tetulia rivers in Bhola in defiance of the ban. Some 13,500 metres of net, 30 kg of hilsa and four boats were seized from them.

At about 11:30am on Thursday, 17 October, Bhola district fisheries officer Biswajit Kumar Deb said the 10 fishermen were detained with hilsa, nets and boats while fishing in the Meghna and Tetulia rivers in Lalmohan between Wednesday evening and night.

A mobile court then fined each fisherman Tk 5,000, a total of Tk 50,000. The court was run by Lalmohan upazila nirbahi officer Md Touhidul Islam and assistant commissioner (land) Ehsanul Haque Shipon.

He added that the seized nets were burned and the hilsa was given to a local orphanage.
