A "king hilsa" weighing 2 kg 500 grams, caught in fishermen's nets in the Meghna river at Daulatkhan in Bhola, has been sold at auction for Tk 11,600.
The fish was auctioned at midday on Thursday, 25 June, at the Majhirhat fish landing in Medua union of the upazila.
How the fish was caught
Fisherman Anis Majhi said that on Thursday morning he, Rahman Majhi and their helpers went fishing in the Meghna next to Medua union. Their nets brought up several hilsa of various sizes, including the large 2.5kg fish. When they took the catch to the Majhirhat fish landing, an auction was held.
He said the king hilsa went to the highest bidder among several wholesalers (aratdars) taking part, for Tk 11,600.
Buyer expects a higher price in Dhaka
Wholesaler Md Alam Bepari, who bought the fish, said he joined several other wholesalers in the auction and won it with the top bid of Tk 11,600. He claimed he would be able to sell it for Tk 12,500 to Tk 13,500 at the Karwan Bazar wholesale market in Dhaka.
District Fisheries Officer Md Iqbal Hossain said fishermen are now getting large hilsa as a result of the success of the earlier fishing bans. He said he hoped fishermen would catch even more hilsa in the days ahead.
