The fisheries department has detained 52 fishermen in Bhola for catching hilsa in the Tetulia river in defiance of the ban. Of them, 42 were jailed or fined, and the rest were released on bond.

During the operation, 70 kg of hilsa, 35,000 metres of net and eight boats were seized from the fishermen.

They were detained from the Tetulia river in Lalmohan upazila of the district on Monday (28 October) morning.

District fisheries officer Biswajit Kumar Deb said the 52 fishermen were detained while catching hilsa in the Tetulia in defiance of the ban. Through a mobile court, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Md Touhidul Islam and the upazila assistant commissioner (land), Md Ehsanul Haque Shipon, then sentenced nine fishermen to five days' simple imprisonment each and fined 33 fishermen Tk 5,000 each. Another 10 fishermen were released on bond because they are minors.

He added that the seized hilsa were distributed to a local orphanage and the nets were burned.
