Members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali have rescued a pair of kalnagini snakes from the office of the Barishal Range Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

The two snakes were rescued after about three and a half hours of effort, from 4pm to 7:30pm on Sunday 7 June, during which a wall of the room was broken. They were then handed over to the Forest Department.

Asadullah Hasan Musa, director of the organisation, said they were told at about 3:30pm that three snakes had entered the DIG's room at the DIG's office in the Kashipur area of Barishal city. The rescue operation began at about 4pm.

He said the ceiling partition of the DIG's room first had to be broken. When no snake was found there, the wall was broken from above, and a pair of mildly venomous kalnagini snakes was found in a gap in the wall. He added, however, that the two snakes are not venomous. After the rescue they were handed over to the Barishal Sadar range of the Forest Department.

Arif Rahman, range officer of the Social Forestry Department's Barishal Sadar range, said: "Members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali rescued the two snakes. The animals are now in the Forest Department's custody and will be released later."

Barishal Range DIG Md Mostafizur Rahman said: "There are bushes around the office. Perhaps the two snakes entered the office from there."
