Barishal's famous seasonal fruit, amra, has been registered as a geographical indication (GI) product.

The district administration's media cell announced it at midnight on Wednesday (30 April). At the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy (state guesthouse Sugandha), Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan and Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki formally handed the GI registration certificate to Barishal Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Delowar Hossain.

According to the source, Barishal's amra is not just a tasty fruit but an important part of the region's heritage, culture and farm-based economy. Its distinctive taste, nutritional value and many uses have made it known across the country. Serving a sour amra dish at the end of a meal at any occasion is a long-standing custom among Barishal's Hindu community, who call it the "shesh pat", or last course.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Delowar Hossain said the GI registration would significantly raise the profile of and demand for Barishal's amra in national and international markets, further enriching agriculture in the south.
