Citing a recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque has said that, according to the FAO report, Bangladesh is set to hold third place in world rice production for the third time in a row. Bangladesh achieved this position by overtaking Indonesia.
He said repeated increases in production prove that Bangladesh is doing consistently well in food production despite the coronavirus and various disasters, and that the country has sustainable production capacity.
The agriculture minister said this as chief guest at a discussion on the "Tree Plantation Programme 2021" organised by the Bangladesh Krishak League at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday, 15 June.
Tree planting as a movement
He also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has turned tree planting into a movement, which is highly significant for environmental protection both nationally and globally. The prime minister returned to the country in 1981 at the risk of her life, and in 1983, despite many obstacles, she started this Krishak League tree plantation programme. Through it she set a unique example not only for the country but for protecting the global environment.
Abdur Razzaque said Bangladesh is on the list of countries most at risk from climate change. Because of climate change and rising global temperatures, low-lying areas of the country will go under water, natural disasters will increase and food security will be threatened. In this situation, everyone must join the Bangladesh Krishak League's tree plantation programme to protect the environment.
The minister said the Ministry of Agriculture and its district, upazila, union and other field offices and officials will take part in the programme and assist the Krishak League.
The event was chaired by Krishak League president agriculturist Samir Chanda. Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Awami League presidium member Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, agriculture and cooperatives affairs secretary Faridunnahar Laily and forest and environment affairs secretary Delwar Hossain spoke as special guests. The meeting was moderated by Krishak League general secretary Advocate Umme Kulsum Smrity.
