Along with bone-chilling cold, dense fog has held sway in Bangladesh this year. The Meteorological Department says fog cut visibility to as low as 100 metres this year.
When visibility becomes poor
Monowar Hossain, an official of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said that when fog brings visibility down to 3,000 metres or less, it is called "poor visibility". He said flights are usually disrupted when visibility falls at airports.
"As soon as it comes to 3,000 metres or below we issue an aviation warning, and when it is 2,000 or below, planes cannot even land," he said.
"On Monday morning visibility in Bangladesh fell to 100 metres," he said. Mr Hossain added that visibility of this kind had also occurred in January in previous years.
Monday's weather forecast said moderate to dense fog could continue across the country.
Residents notice thicker fog
Shabnam Moshfika Oni, a resident of Narayanganj, said she has seen much denser fog this winter than in other years, especially in the mornings.
"There is so much fog that you cannot see anything an arm's length away," she said.
"We call fog 'low cloud'," said meteorologist Mr Hossain.
