A cotton research officer named Chiranton Chakma, 49, has died after being bitten by a venomous snake in Bandarban.

The incident happened at about 10:30pm on Saturday (17 June) at the staff quarters of the Balaghata Hill Cotton Research Centre.

Chiranton Chakma was the unit cotton officer at the Balaghata Hill Cotton Research Centre and the son of Mrinal Kanti Chakma of the Bonrupa Para area of Rangamati.

Mongsanu Marma, senior scientific officer at the Hill Cotton Research Centre, citing the family, said a venomous snake bit him in the yard of his quarters at the centre at 10:30pm on Saturday. He was taken to Bandarban Sadar Hospital, and when his condition deteriorated there he was sent to hospital in Chattogram for better treatment. He died while undergoing treatment in Chattogram.

Bandarban civil surgeon Dr Niharanjan Nandi said antivenom should not be given to a person without proper assessment. The snakebite patient was given antivenom on Saturday, he said, but when his condition worsened he was advised to go to hospital in Chattogram for advanced treatment.
