Villages across Shibganj and Mokamtala in Bogura are full of banana orchards, and their fruit travels to every corner of the country. Growers cut the mature bunches from the plants; much of the crop is sold straight from the orchard, and the rest goes to local markets and on to distant depots. Prothom Alo photographer Soel Rana recently photographed that journey from orchard to market.
The series opens on a bunch ripening on the plant with a myna perched on it, followed by rows of plants hung with heavy bunches.
Then the bunches are cut and carried out, heaped beside the orchard, loaded fresh onto vans for the depot and finally lifted onto a truck bound for markets across the country.
For banana growers in the north, selling to traders at the orchard and trucking the fruit to distant markets is the supply chain their income depends on, and the pictures follow it step by step.
