Eid-ul-Azha is just a week away, and the name 'Sultan' has already spread as the biggest bull in the district. The bull is 10 feet long, 6 feet tall and weighs 1,200 kg. The asking price is Tk 10 lakh.
Curious crowds gather every day at the Kamal Agro Park farm in Baga village of Rampal upazila, Bagerhat, to see the huge animal.
The farm has large local and foreign cattle, and 30 animals are ready for the Eid, weighing from 350 kg to 1,200 kg. After only two years and three months on the farm, Sultan's live weight has reached 1,200 kg. He is given Tk 1,000 to 1,500 worth of feed a day.
Bought as a hobby during Covid
Kamal Agro Park owner Sheikh Kamal Hossain said the one-year-old Holstein Friesian bull was bought as a hobby during the coronavirus period from the Betaga cattle market in Fakirhat for Tk 1,39,000. It is being raised entirely by organic methods, he said, and in only two years and three months its live weight has reached 1,183 kg. It is fed Tk 1,000 to 1,500 worth of local feed a day, including straw, grass and bran.
Although the animals were first raised as a hobby, the farm is now commercial, and Sultan, its biggest bull, will be sold at the Eid if a fair price is offered, he said. The farm has 48 animals in all.
Neighbour Abu Taleb said such huge cattle are rarely seen in the area, so people come from different places to see Sultan. No deal has been struck yet, he said, but buyers will crowd in as the Eid approaches.
'Biggest in the district'
Md Enamul Akunji, primary veterinarian at the Rampal upazila livestock department, said they advise farmers raising local and foreign breeds in various ways. As far as he knows, there is no other bull this big anywhere in the district.
Dr Mohammad Shariful Islam, an official of the Bagerhat district livestock department, said 1,02,000 animals are ready for sacrifice on 8,000 farms in the district this year, more than the demand. At present, buyers are most drawn to the Kamal Agro Park farm in Baga village, and to his knowledge Sultan is the biggest bull in the district.
