The army is running drives against overcharging of fares during the Eid journey home and extortion at sacrificial animal markets. Nine people have been arrested in total.

The information was given on the verified Facebook page of the Bangladesh Army on Sunday; the report gives the date as 1 April. The army said that in the current situation in the country it continues to carry out its duties with professionalism and neutrality to ensure public safety, keep law and order under control and prevent unlawful activities.

As part of this, army members were on a regular patrol at 10:30pm on 30 May in the Kamarpara area next to Sector 10 of Uttara in the capital. Several people (five) were arrested there on allegations of setting up an illegal market, forcing cattle traders to sell at a particular market, and extortion.

In addition, a drive was carried out in the Abdullahpur bus stand area of the capital from 4pm to 6:30pm on 31 May, and four people were arrested for charging extra bus fares. After the necessary questioning, those arrested were handed over to the police.

The army said such drives would continue in future to maintain law and order and ensure public safety.
